Fredericksburg

Blending German heritage and Texan hospitality for over 150 years, Fredericksburg (German: Friedrichsburg) was founded in 1846 by Baron Otfried Hans von Meusebach, new Commissioner General of the "Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas", also known as the "Noblemen's Society" (in German: Mainzer Adelsverein), and named in honor of Prince Frederick of Prussia, nephew of Prussia's King Frederick William III, and highest ranking member of the Mainzer Adelsverein. Baron von Meusebach renounced his noble title and became known in Texas as John O. Meusebach. Settled largely by liberal, educated Germans fleeing the failed Revolution of 1848, Gillespie County voted against secession prior to the American Civil War. Also the home of Architect Chester Nagel.

The town is also notable as the home of Texas German, a German dialect spoken by the first generations of settlers who initially refused to learn English. They brokered with the Natives of that region the only Indian-Anglo treaty in the United States which has not yet been broken. They refused to own slaves and were an important part of the Pro-Union Texas resistance during the Civil War, facing ostracization from their slaveholding neighbors. Its concentration of German-American settlers means that it shares many cultural characteristics with New Braunfels, another German Texan town.

Located on a six-acre site, the Center includes the George Bush Gallery, Admiral Nimitz Museum, Plaza of Presidents, Veterans' Walk of Honor, Japanese Garden of Peace, Pacific Combat Zone, and the Center for Pacific War Studies.

Pioneer Museum Complex

We operate two museums, the largest being the Pioneer Museum Complex which was created in 1956 when the Historical Society bought the home, smokehouse and barn of Henry Kammlah and turned it into a small museum. Since then six major structures have been added and the museum has frontage on two streets.

Our second museum is the Vereinskirche. This was the first museum the city of Fredericksburg had when the Historical Society opened it in 1935. Today we have permanent exhibits focusing on the history of the area and also a space for rotating photograph exhibits. We also have books and souvenirs.
