River Walk of San Antonio

San Antonio's historic River Walk extends some 2½ miles, attracting several million visitors every year.

There is nothing like strolling down the network of winding walkways or sitting on the patio sipping your favorite beverage maybe dining at one of the many fine restaurants in the area also not to miss a little serious shopping at one of the many great shops...

The River Walk winds and loops under bridges as two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants and shops, connecting the Alamo Plaza to Rivercenter, to the Arneson River Theatre close to La Villita, to Hemisfair Park, to the Tower Life Building. During the annual springtime Fiesta San Antonio, the River Parade features flowery floats.

The River Walk was the idea of architect Robert Hugman in the late 1920's as an alternative to paving over the troublesome San Antonio River. It allowed for both flood prevention and commercial development and is located one story beneath downtown.

A major extension of the River Walk was completed in 1968, just in time for the opening of San Antonio's World Exposition, HemisFair. This extension opened into the city's new convention center complex as well.

The HemisFair brought to San Antonio world attention for the first time. It brought thousands to the city, most of whom had never seen the city's River Walk. HemisFair, in a way, was the introductory unveiling of San Antonio, the Alamo, and the exciting River Walk.
